Traditionally, it is hard to think of vampires without associating them with bats. Dracula, the definitive vampire, turned into a bat on numerous occasions. Bat transformation gave him a means to escape immediate danger. It was also a way to move undetected, stalking his prey and swooping in for an attack.

Although we do not witness Spike turn into a bat, his leather coat is an excellent way of conveying the cloaking, swooping qualities we normally associate with this creature of the night. His leather coat looks much like the wings of a bat when at rest. The coat that Spike wears is very long, made from soft leather and it moves freely as he does.

In the early days of Spike, he was scarcely seen without his coat as it is a strong means of identifying and accentuating the essence of his personality. How did Spike get his coat?

We are told that Spike has already eliminated two slayers before he meets Buffy. The first was in China (1900) and the second, Nikki Wood, in 1977 on a New York subway. Once Spike has defeated Nikki, he steals her duster and makes it his own. His story in the making.

The English accent, confident swagger and blunt nature quickly endeared him to us as the new bad boy in town. There are two elements of Spike’s appearance that immediately identify him. One is his long leather coat, the other is his shockingly blonde hair.

You might be forgiven for thinking that Spike earned his name from his clipped blonde hair or his ‘spikey’ personality. Neither is true. He in fact earned it from his reputation for attacking victims with a railroad spike. In a flash back episode to when Spike was alive, we hear one of his harshest critics loudly declaring that he would rather have his head impaled with a railroad spike than listen to more of William’s (Spike’s) poetry. Be careful what you wish for, we would say.

Creating the Spike Hair

If you have been blessed with short blonde hair that stays where it is put, then you can create the Spike hairdo with some hair products and a little patience. If you need a little help in the hair department, your best and easiest option is a short, blonde wig.

Description

The Jeans we have selected to match with your Spike Costume are Levi 501s. Levi Strauss invented jeans in 1873 and they are still one of the most iconic pieces of clothing in the world. Given that Spike is estimated to have been born about 20 years before that, it is appropriate that he would choose a classic pair of pants that have stood the test of time, much like he has.

Description

These combat boots are mid-calf high and made from faux leather. They have a heel of approximately 1.25 inches and ridgy soles for grip. There are laces up the front with three horizontal straps across the instep, ankle and around the calf. Each strap has a shiny silver buckle. The boots have a zipper closure on the inside of the leg which makes pulling the boots on and removal, easier.

The belt we have selected to match with your Spike Costume is a plain black belt with a silver colored buckle. It is made from 40% leather, 40% bonded leather and 20% polyurethane. This belt also comes in a range of colors and a large range of sizes from 28 – 54 inches.

Verdict

We sometimes see Spike wearing a red shirt underneath his coat. During the Thanksgiving episode when Spike is taking refuge from The Initiative in Giles’ house, we see him tied to a chair without his leather coat but wearing his red shirt. For a vampire, if you want to inject a little color into your ensemble, it is the ideal color to choose. It co-ordinates well with black for a truly masculine look but above all else it hides the blood-stains.

Roguish in Red

The way Spike wears his shirt is usually open. Under his coat, this creates a stylish layer look that adds a splash of color but does not take over from the dominant black. You could be forgiven for thinking he is wearing a red waistcoat because of how Spike wears it, but is in infact a loose fitting, soft, red shirt.

This is an optional part of Spike’s Costume as you could certainly get away with just the black T-shirt and his leather coat. However, we think it makes a great splash of color and adds to the layer look which Spike wears so well. The shirt we have selected is plain red in a flannel fabric that hangs beautifully and co-ordinates so well with the rest of his ensemble.

Spike Makeup

Does he or Doesn’t He?

At first glance you might be forgiven for thinking that Spike does not wear any makeup. However, for that true, palid, lack of circulation, vampire look, you might want to consider adding a modest amount of makeup.

Foundation makeup

The simplest way to create the bloodless, never see the sunlight look, is to cover your whole face in a shade of foundation that is a couple of shades lighter than your own skin tone. Don’t forget to add some to your lips as they should be pale also.

Tip: It’s a good idea to do this before you put your wig on to make sure to get right up to your own hair line without marking your wig.

Black Eye Liner Pencil

Draw a line close to your eye lashes to add accent to your eyes and make them pop! A great tip is to gently smooth the line out with a cotton-bud. You can also gently apply this eyeliner crayon on your eyebrows to highlight them which will accentuate the blondeness of Spike’s hair.

At various times, Spike has leaned quite heavily on the eyeliner. During his second slayer battle, Spike’s eyes were heavily accented with black. It was at the end of this battle that Spike purloined his infamous leather coat, stealing it from the body of the slayer he had just killed.

White Eyeliner

If you want to recreate Spike’s scar, we suggest you experiment with some hair laquer to create a gap in your eye brow and then accentuate the scar line with a white makeup pencil. Gently add a line of black along side to give a 3D look. With a little practice and some patience, you too can have a scar like Spike’s!

A Scar is Born

Fans of Spike may recall that he earned a ‘V’ shaped scar over his left eye during his first battle with a slayer. In reality, the scar is a genuine blemish on the face of actor James Marsters which he acquired when he found himself on the victim end of a real life mugging. Makeup artist Todd Mackintosh made the most of James’ own scar by shaving part of James’ eyebrow and accentuating the scar underneath.
