When we first meet Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean ‘The Curse of The Black Pearl’, he is wearing only one ring on the index finger of his right hand. This ring bears a very distinctive bright green Emerald stone. The shoulder of the ring contains skull detail. He keeps this ring throughout his adventures in the Caribbean but over the course of his escapades, adds three more rings to his collection.
The skull ring is one that actually belongs to the actor, Johnny Depp. Back in January 1991, Johnny can be seen wearing the ring when he appeared on the front cover of RollingStone Magazine issue #595.
This ring shows a gold colored dragon on a bed of Jade. The provenance of this ring has been provided by the actor John Depp, who brings the character of Jack Sparrow to life. Apparently, Jack obtained this oriental dragon ring while in the Far East and he wears it to remind him of that adventure. Most likely this was during his escapades in Pirate of the Caribbean ‘At World’s End’.
To begin with, Jack wears the dragon ring on his left index finger. When he acquires his next ring, colloquially known as ‘the stolen ring’, he moves the dragon ring to his left thumb to make way on his index finger for his new ring.
The third ring Jack Sparrow adds to his collection bears a dark purple stone in a plain, rectangular setting. Jack wears this ring on the index finger of his left hand. It is known as ‘The Stolen Ring’ or ‘The Ring of Thieves’ because of its colorful history of changing hands.
Originally, this ring had been given as a gift to ‘Angelica’, daughter of the infamous Black Beard’, Pirates of the Caribbean ‘On Stranger Tides’. Angelica trades the ring to Tia Dalma in return for the secrets of the ‘Fountain of Youth’.
Fast forward, and Angelica’s old flame Jack Sparrow steals the ring from Tia Dalma and returns it to Angelica hoping she will share with him the secrets of the ‘Fountain of Youth’. The exchange between Angelica and Jack Sparrow reveals much about their relationship, their personalities and what they are each prepared to do to get what they want.
Sadly, this exchange between Jack and Angelica was not included in the final cut. Jack’s fourth ring, he acquired during Pirates of the Carribean ‘On Stranger Tides’, is known as the flower ring, also known as the button ring. It is a very pretty ring bearing an etched gold colored flower embedded with clear stones set on a black background. The provenance of this ring was not revealed during any of the movies. However, the actor Johnny Depp, with his inside knowledge of that loveable scoundrel Jack Sparrow, has provided the story of how Jack came by the flower ring. Apparently, Jack Sparrow stole this ring from a Spanish widow whom he had seduced. It is the most ornate of the four rings and Jack wears it on his left hand ring finger.
