Classic, Gothic & Movie-Inspired Ideas
There is something wonderfully suspicious about a witch who looks as though she has dressed for a perfectly respectable evening out. The velvet is lovely, the jewellery is exquisite, and you have a horrible feeling she knows what you did last Halloween.Â
Of course, there is plenty to love about the other sort too: crooked hat, tangled hair and a broom that has clearly seen better centuries. Witches give us a glorious choice between looking elegant and looking as though we have just crawled out of a particularly unpleasant fairy tale.Â
The trick is to choose a witch with a bit of character. You might want a grand entrance, a gruesome face, or an outfit you can put together without spending the whole of October sewing. Here are the witch Halloween costumes we would happily invite to the party. Some may need watching around the drinks.Â
The classic Halloween witch
A tall pointed hat, a sweeping black skirt and a proper twiggy broom are still a lovely sight on Halloween night. You are a witch, and everyone at the door knows it. That is a great advantage when you would rather get on with enjoying Halloween than explain which film your costume comes from.Â
Classic, Elegant Witch
For a truly elegant witchy look, you cannot go wrong with a sumptuously stylish velvet black magic dress, a floor length cape and some Halloween inspired costume jewellery to complete the ensemble. Don’t forget the hat.

Here is how you can put this classic yet elegant Halloween witch outfit together. A classic gown, a dramatic cape and a simple witch hat are the basic requirements. Adorn the hat and add some witch inspired jewellery. If you fancy carrying something a little less cumbersome than a broomstick, check out or suggestion for a crystal wand fit for a diva!

The best dressed witch has arrived.
Here we have matched this elegant black velvet dress with a cloak which is available in either short or long and comes with a range of different linings together with some elegant jewellery that is just right for a wicked witch look on Halloween.
Which Witch Hat?
The hat deserves more attention than it usually gets. A broad brim casts a shadow over your eyes, while a slightly crooked point gives the whole outfit personality. Compare that with a tiny shiny hat perched on an otherwise ordinary black dress and you will see why we would put our money into the headwear first. Try it on before adding decorations; a brim that flops into your face will become tiresome very quickly.Â
DIY Classic Halloween Witch
For a simple DIY version, start with a black dress or a black top and long skirt. Tie a narrow scarf around your waist and add boots you already own. A scrap of grey gauze draped over one shoulder looks like an old cobweb, especially with a single spider caught in it. You can pin similar wisps to the hat, but leave some bare fabric showing. Too much cobweb and you start to look as though you have been put away with the decorations!Â
To create the cool classic witch ensemble below, we took a simple black maxi dress, added some grey gauze fabric and a classic pointy witches hat. This is how easily you can create a show stopping classic witch’s costume with minimal cost.

The dress is a classic. When Halloween is over, you will add it to your wardrobe for future events. You will find the grey gauze fabric is so versatile. It is simply magic at bringing the rest of your Halloween decorations together and is also available in a range of colors. The pointy hat might not have too many other uses rather than being a witches hat, but it could cause a stir when you open the door wearing it in July!
Go Green Classic Witch
Green make-up gives this witch a more theatrical face; dark eye make-up and your own skin tone make her easier to get ready. Neither needs a plastic nose. If you do go green, include the ears and any visible neck, otherwise the face looks rather detached from its owner. Use face and body make-up, and try the colour before the evening itself.Â
This is our favourite quick choice for handing out sweets. Put a black cat beside the cauldron, whether that is a toy or a willing friend in cat ears, and you have a cheerful little Halloween scene with a distinctly untrustworthy hostess.Â
The gothic witchÂ
Black velvet, trailing lace and a deep burgundy lip give this witch the sort of elegance that suggests she owns a crumbling house and has no intention of discussing what is in the cellar. The appeal is in the fabrics: soft velvet beside delicate lace, with a little dull silver catching the light.Â
Zombie Pit does Gothic Witch

A long dress with bell sleeves makes a beautiful starting point. A lace blouse and full skirt can be just as effective, particularly if you already have gothic clothes you enjoy wearing. We would choose a fitted waist and roomy sleeves over a dress covered in printed pentagrams. The shape and movement are far more interesting than another set of symbols stamped onto thin fabric.Â
The Dress
For your gothic witch we have selected a dress that we think will do most of the work for you. The Lace-up bodice give a touch of vintage elegance while the dramatic bell sleeves are great for making grand, spell-like gestures. The luxurious velour fabric and flowing hem will help capture your inner sorceress and channel it wherever you sashay!

but this is a dress you can wear for many occasions.

If you want something a little different from a witch’s pointy hat, here we have matched a gothic themed hair accessory with a matching gothic themed broomstick. Both items are adorned with a layered sheer tulle, deep crimson or black rose, and skeleton hand detail. With a classy broomstick to match your hair accessory, no other witch will get confused at the end of the evening and carry home your broomstick by mistake!
If you are looking for a witch’s traditional hat with a difference, then why not go all out with a sequinned look? It will catch the light and the attention of everyone at the party! As a change from the broomstick, you could consider a wizard/witch staff. What could be more magical than one embedded with a crystal ball that changes color on demand?
Be choosy with the jewellery. A large pendant, a few rings and an ornate belt are enough; you do not have to wear the contents of the entire crypt. If the dress has magnificent sleeves, let them be the attraction. Lift your hand in a photograph and the lace will do much of the posing for you.Â
The Gothic Witch is a particularly good choice if you want to feel dressed up all evening. The glamorous hair accessories we have chosen will look great on any number of occasions, and the dress will probably find its way back out of the wardrobe long after Halloween has cast its last spell.Â
The woodland witchÂ

This witch has no use for a glossy black dress. Her clothes are the colours of damp bark, old leaves and moss, and her pockets appear to contain things that nobody sensible would put in a pocket.Â
Build her from a brown or charcoal skirt, a loose blouse and a worn-looking shawl. Uneven layers work well here. Let a strip of gauze hang below the skirt or tuck a faded scarf into the belt, so the clothes look gathered over time rather than bought together. A little olive green stops the browns becoming drab.Â

Start with the basics, a skirt, a blouse and a shawl.
The key to this costume is layers.
Add a hat, a belt, flora and a hint of magic!
Next add the details that suggest a life in the woods. Tie imitation herbs to the belt, fasten a small pouch at the waist and tuck artificial leaves into the shawl. A burlap witch hat looks suitably weathered, but you could instead weave a few flexible imitation twigs around a headband. Keep that wreath sparse and crooked. Pretty flowers and neat little antlers will take you closer to a woodland fairy than the unsettling creature we have in mind.Â
Here we have a cute little witches hat that is going to serve your wardrobe well long after Halloween. It is available in a range of colors so pick your favorite. For our woodland witch to carry her accessories, we have included a renaissance belt that comes with some brilliant witchy attachments together with a foraging bag to house the larger items. With the foraging bag you can have a lot of fun. Add a fake toad, a homemade book of spells, some ivy strands, or even perhaps a stuffed mouse. You could also add some Halloween candy especially anything witchy related.
A walking stick gives her something to lean on as she watches the party, and a small dark bottle can stand in for whatever dreadful remedy she is offering. We especially like her with a toy crow on one shoulder. It gives you the feeling that the pair have already discussed the guests and found them wanting.Â
This is an enjoyable costume to make because the odd scraps are part of its charm. You can also make a coven without dressing everyone identically: one witch in rusty autumn colours, another in grey, another with moss-green layers. Together they look as though they have come from different corners of the same forest.Â
The fairy-tale hagÂ
If you would rather frighten people than look glamorous, give your witch a face they would prefer not to meet in the dark. A heavy hood, stringy grey hair and an unpleasant grin can be far more effective than a dress with flames printed up the front.
Choose a hooded cloak or an oversized dark shawl over simple clothes. The hood frames the face and hides most of the outfit, which is useful when the make-up is the main attraction.
For a recognisable version, take inspiration from the Queen’s peddler disguise in Disney’s animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The black hood, white hair and bright red apple are a deliciously sinister combination.

Add a white wig, a prop Apple, an ugly face and voila!
Evil hag reporting for scare duty. Brings her own poisoned apple.
Carry the apple in a small basket and you have an excellent partner for someone dressed as Snow White. It also gives you a prop you can actually keep beside you, instead of a broom that spends the evening behind a radiator.Â
Makeup or Mask?
Â
A well-shaped witch mask is worth considering if you enjoy a really grotesque look but do not fancy making prosthetics. Look for expression in the brow and mouth, not merely a huge nose. A face that seems to be quietly enjoying something dreadful is much more interesting than a blank rubber scowl. For a party with food and conversation, however, make-up is usually the less troublesome choice.Â
If you are going to do your own makeup, the important factor is to create lots of dark lines and heavy shading. Specifically, shade beneath the cheekbones and around the eyes, then add a few fine wrinkles with a narrow brush. Blend them a little; thick black lines tend to look drawn on rather than lived in.Â
For a truly professional look, check out this video tutorial that shows how you can transform yourself into the evil witch from Snow White.
Let the hood and face do their work. This witch does not need glitter, a miniature hat or a necklace explaining that she is wicked. Her expression should make that quite clear.Â
The Sanderson sisters from Hocus PocusÂ
For a group of three who would like to arrive with a little colour and a great deal of personality, the Sanderson sisters are hard to resist. Their clothes are gloriously mismatched, their hair is outrageous, and each sister gives you something different to enjoy. This is a much livelier prospect than asking three friends to buy the same black witch dress.Â
Winifred Sanderson
Winifred is the obvious choice for the friend who intends to take charge. Her green coat-like outer dress, purple underneath and copper-red hair piled into two high curls make a splendidly bossy picture. The hair is worth getting right. Flat red hair with a green dress loses much of what makes Winnie so distinctive. A styled wig is likely to save more trouble than trying to persuade your own hair to defy gravity for the evening.Â
Sarah Sanderson
Sarah is the softer-looking sister, with long blonde hair, a pinkish bodice and lace sleeves above a skirt full of purple, red and gold tones. The contrast between those delicate sleeves and her decidedly unpleasant intentions is part of the fun. You can approximate the outfit with a lace top, a laced bodice and layered skirts, provided you keep the colours rather than substituting an all-black dress.Â
Mary Sanderson
Mary has perhaps the most enjoyable silhouette of the lot. Her dark hair twists up into a crooked point, while the red and russet upper layers, checked skirt and apron give her clothes a busy, homely appearance. She looks as though she might be about to offer you something from the oven. Knowing the sisters, it would be wise to ask what went into it.Â
This is one of those costumes where a complete outfit can save a considerable amount of sewing and time. In some cases, some sets suggest they have achieved the look of separate layers by printing them onto a single piece of fabric. Check the details of the costume you are considering for this detail to make sure you are happy about it.
If a fourth friend wants to join, Billy Butcherson gives the sisters a wonderfully shabby zombie companion. Winifred and Billy also make an entertaining pair on their own. Keep the stitched-mouth effect as make-up so Billy can still complain about the company.Â
Nancy Downs from The Craft
Â
Nancy looks as though she has taken a school uniform and declared war on it. The white shirt is still there, but now it sits beneath a dark jacket, with a short skirt, heavy boots and jewellery that is considerably less obedient than the dress code.Â

Fairuza Balk’s witch is a fine choice if you like your Halloween costumes fierce rather than frilly.
Start with the school-uniform look from the 1996 film: a white shirt, dark pleated skirt and black jacket. A leather-look jacket is an easy approximation; a glossy black PVC coat brings you closer to one of Nancy’s most striking looks. IF you already have a jacket or coat in this style, it’s an easy decision. If you don’t, pick the one you think you will wear most often once Halloween is over.
Heavy lace-up boots look splendid beneath the short skirt. Dainty shoes take much of the bite out of the outfit. Nancy is seen wearing both styles. Again, select the style that suits your taste and pocket. Either pair of boots deserve to be worn when you have finished with your Nancy Down’s look.
Pay attention to the face and hair. Nancy’s dark lipstick, heavily lined eyes and short, tousled black hair make a big difference. The beauty of gothic makeup is that it is difficult to add too much or get it wrong. Just keep adding more until you are happy with the look.
Add a studded choker and layered cross or rosary-style necklaces to echo her particular mix of school clothes and goth accessories. A pointed hat would spoil it. Nancy has quite enough menace without one.Â
The Craft turns thirty in 2026, which is a pleasing excuse to bring its coven back out for Halloween. Four friends can take Nancy, Sarah, Bonnie and Rochelle, keeping the school-uniform connection while giving each outfit its own details. Rochelle’s braces and checked skirt, for example, offer something different from Nancy’s heavier layers. Use a photograph of the scene you want to recreate before everyone gets dressed; the girls wear several outfits, and matching the same scene makes a much better group picture.Â
We like Nancy for a Halloween night out because most of the clothes can come from an ordinary wardrobe or a charity shop. Spend your effort on the hair, jewellery and make-up. Her expression is unlikely to require much encouragement once somebody has asked you to smile.Â
Sabrina Spellman from Chilling Adventures of SabrinaÂ
Sabrina offers a rather different sort of horror heroine: neat little collar, blonde bob, black headband, and an alarming amount of trouble waiting just outside the school gates. Her clothes look almost reassuring. That is what makes them such a good contrast to the dark world of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.Â

For the early-series look, choose a red dress with a pale lace collar, dark tights and simple black shoes. A detachable collar can give a plain dress the right character without a sewing project. Keep the shape fairly tidy, with a short or knee-length skirt and sleeves, rather than choosing a flowing witch gown.
A red coat is a lovely alternative if you will be outdoors for much of the evening. Button it over the dress and you can look like Sabrina while remaining sensibly wrapped up. There is something rather satisfying about a Halloween outfit that already includes its own coat.Â
The black headband against a curled blonde bob is the detail we would be reluctant to leave out.Â
The series gives this sweet-looking outfit a distinctly sinister edge. Sabrina has rather more to worry about than homework, and that neat little headband survives some very unpleasant company. Leave the broom and green make-up at home. A black toy cat tucked under one arm is a charming extra, and far less demanding than persuading a real cat to attend a party.Â
Agatha Harkness from Agatha All AlongÂ
Agatha’s long blue coat is a marvellous piece of witch clothing. It has the sweep and drama of a cloak, but the white shirt and trousers underneath make her look ready to get on with whatever questionable business she has planned.
Ready Made Agatha Harkness Set
The ready made version is available which can save you a lot of needle work and immediately captures the look of Agatha Harkness.

Just add boots and the hair style and you are good to go.
Boots and Wig
Chances are you already have footwear that will complete your look. If you need boots or need some help to capture those long, curvy locks, check out the boots and wig below.
Just buy what you need Agatha Harkness
For Kathryn Hahn’s Witches’ Road outfit, look for a navy coat that fits at the waist and opens out below it. Wear it with a white shirt, dark trousers and boots. A shapeless dressing gown will not give you the same effect; the coat needs a little structure across the shoulders and through the waist. It is the one piece we would take time over, even if the rest comes straight out of your wardrobe.Â

This coat is a wonderfully dramatic centerpiece for your Agatha Harkness Costume, If you want to capture the purple lining of Agatha coat, you do not need to line an entire garment to suggest it; a panel of purple fabric inside each front opening can give a glimpse of color as you walk.
If you are buying your items separately, here is a pair of pants and a shirt that would complete your Agatha Harkness look. Agatha wears a cameo brooch or a pendant of Triple-Goddess symbol of the maiden, mother, and crone archetypes of witchcraft, representing her power and connection to the coven. You can finish your Agatha Harkness costume with the pendant we have selected below. You can carry a small drawstring bag if you want to echo her accessories without giving yourself a large prop to mind.Â
The pleasure of this costume is that you get to be a witch with some swagger. It suits someone who would rather stride into the room than float about looking mysterious. For a coven, friends can choose the other characters’ Witches’ Road clothes, but use pictures from the same part of the series; the show has plenty of costume changes. Agatha’s blue coat makes a handsome centrepiece without forcing everybody else into matching robes.Â
The Grand High Witch from The Witches
For elegant nastiness, Anjelica Huston’s Grand High Witch is a treat. In the 1990 film she has a sleek dark bob, a fitted black dress and long gloves, with purple fabric sweeping behind her. She looks quite capable of ruining your evening before she has said a word.Â

The disguised witch version where the Grand Witch appears outwardly human, is a very achievable costume. Start with a black evening dress, add long black gloves and a cape or train with a rich purple outer and black lining.
A blunt dark wig and bold earrings give the upper half the same severe glamour as the clothes. Keep the hair smooth. This particular witch is much too grand to arrive with twigs in it. The Grand High Witch enjoys her bling. If you feel inclined, follow Angelica Huston’s lead and add some bracelets and rings on top of your black gloves to make a statement worthy of the Grand High witch.
One useful warning when shopping, an outfit labelled “Grand High Witch” may be based on Roald Dahl’s book illustrations or the 2020 film, rather than Huston’s costume. A purple dress is not automatically the version you want. Compare the outfit with a still from the 1990 hotel convention scene with Angelica Huston. This is the look we want to create.
Ugly Version
Then there is the hideous face beneath the disguise. If making monsters is your favourite part of Halloween, a bald cap, a deeply wrinkled face and grotesque ears offer a glorious challenge. It is a much bigger undertaking than the elegant version. We would happily choose the black dress and purple cape for a party, saving the full transformation for someone who actually enjoys spending time on prosthetics.Â
Of course, if you want the quick impact of the grotesque side of the Grand High Witch, you could go for the full head mask that captures every lump, bump, gnarl and hair covered wart of that lovable old wicked witch. It will definitely get you all the attention at the witches convention!

Finishing Touch
A toy mouse peeping from a small handbag is a lovely final detail. It will tell the right people exactly which witch they are dealing with, and gives everyone else a reason to be mildly concerned about the contents of your bag.Â
Glinda from The Wizard of Oz
Â
In amongst the Sanderson sisters, Woodland witches, Wicked witches and the astral psychiatrist’s dream that is Agatha Harkness, we thought we should include one honest to goodness, down to rainbow, good witch who happens to be beautiful, kind, stunningly dressed and knows how to make an entrance.

Glinda, the good witch of the North is just as powerful as the wicked witch of the west but she would rather help out by making it snow to save Dorothy from the poisoned poppies than create havoc with a dawn raid on the Emerald city with a bunch of flying monkeys.
There are plenty of diva witches who can bring suspense and thrills to the party, but the simple beauty and radiant smile from Glinda will always bring a sense of warm magic wherever she glides. Her costume is instantly recognisable: A pink ball gown, a crystal crown, stunning red locks of curls and a wand that can turn a house crushing crime scene into the stage setting for a full cast Munchkins song and dance routine. If the buffet runs low, we’re pretty sure she could help with that too.
This side of the rainbow, the easiest way to create your Glinda the good witch of the North costume is to find a deluxe made dress with matching crown and necklace. There are some great ready made options available that will have you kitted out before you can say “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo!”
Glinda Dress, Crown & Necklace

Now you have the basics, you are going to need a stunning red curly wig and some suitable shoes to complete your ensemble.
Which Witch Wand?
When it comes to finding the right wand for Glinda, we at Zombie Pit think that you could afford to break with the traditional star on a stick and go for something that will bring some laughs and atmosphere to the party.

Having a wand that can create bubbles wherever you go is a great ice breaker at a party and will delight all the munchkins who are gathered. It will take people right back to the “Wizard of Oz” movie when Glinda made that sensational entrance. “She came down in a bubble, Doug!”
Spread the joy. Make the bubbles.
Choosing your witch
If you have a black dress and an evening to get ready, start with the classic witch and give her a hat with a bit of character. If getting dressed is half the pleasure, the gothic witch lets you enjoy those beautiful fabrics without chasing a film replica. For three friends, we would choose the Sanderson sisters and settle the question of who gets to be Winnie early.Â
Our pick for proper wickedness is the Grand High Witch. The gloves, the severe hair, that flash of purple behind the black dress: she is splendid before you even consider the monster underneath. Find a small mouse for your handbag and go and introduce yourself. We suspect the guests will remember you.
If you love the idea of magic but see yourself as more of a good witch, Glinda is the ultimate choice. This is a sensational outfit to wear, part witch, part princess. What’s not to love?
Final thought: at the end of the Rainbow, Glinda tells Dorothy that she had the power to send herself home all the time. Why do you think she kept quiet about that one?
